May 2009:

After putting a 9 inch crack in my Dagger Kingpin kayak on the Elk River I called John St. John from Hog Island Boatworks (http://www.hogislandboatworks.com/) to see if he could weld such a large crack. "No worries, anything is possible" John told me, "come on by tomorrow, we'll weld it up and then go boating".

John is well known in Steamboat Springs as the owner of Hog Island Boatworks, one of North America's top water craft makers of roto-molderd drift and skiff boats which are known far and wide as indestructible, unsinkable and incomparable.

Just like patching a raft, the inside/outside weld took about 45-min to lay down and meld the materials together. John placed metal fiber mesh on the ends of the crack, similar to butterfly band aids to keep the crack from spreading. Once he finished we paddled the Yampa and took out at his shop.

It seems to be holding strong and hope to get several more years out of this boat, though it probably won't be going back up to the Elk anytime soon. KV
