Yampa River Ambassador

Friends of the Yampa is seeking two people to fulfill the positions of Yampa River Ambassador, a seasonal, part-time position to help ensure visitors to the Yampa River wishing to recreate on the river are aware of safe put-ins and take-outs, are informed of the necessary river-use knowledge, recreate responsibly, give safety tips, help keep the Yampa clean, among other duties. This position is a collaborative effort of Friends of the Yampa and the City of Steamboat Springs.

Get paid to be outside beside the river and be a Yampa River steward.

POSITIONS ARE NON-EXEMPT POSITIONS. POSITIONS ARE OPEN UNTIL FILLED.

Job Description:

• Lead outreach stations at put-in and take-out locations along the Yampa during floating season, with an emphasis during high-use periods.
• Facilitate volunteers throughout the floating season, communicating needs and locations, scheduling, including helping track hours, ensuring they have their volunteer perks, help plan and set up volunteer appreciation celebration, among other needs.
• Provide updates for Friends of the Yampa’s Know Before You Go website interfaces.
• Facilitate conversation with Yampa River visitors at access points. Build excitement while encouraging responsible river use.
• Pick up trash as needed.
• Observe and report river conditions to Friends of the Yampa and City of Steamboat Springs.
• Instill “Respect the Yampa” values
• Count visitors and craft type throughout access points.
  • This is not an enforcing position and only seeks to educate people, you will not be expected to continue engagement with difficult people.
• Report escalating issues to the Steamboat Springs Police Department
• Hand out river safety merch and Know Before You Go information.
• Other duties as assigned related to the River Ambassador Program.

Work hour expectations:

Applicants must be available to work 3 days a week for 5-6 hours a shift and 2-3 weekends for 6-7 hours shift per month from mid-May to mid-August (depending on flows). Availability past this date will be needed but will be more flexible.

Applicant needs:

• Good interpersonal skills and willingness to talk to new people.
• Some knowledge of the Yampa River through Steamboat Springs.
• A love of the Yampa River.
• Willing and capable of standing outside and on feet for long periods of time.
• Experience with social media and website interfaces.
• Some organization skills to organize scheduling and volunteers.
• Ability to bring personal supplies to stay comfortable in all weather, spring through fall.
• 18 or older

Pay and benefits:

• $20-25 per hour, no benefits accompany this position. Approximately 15-25 hours per week.
