Friends of the Yampa is Hiring an Environmental Program Manager

Position Description: 

Friends of the Yampa (FOTY) is seeking an Environmental Program Manager to help increase our impact in the Yampa Watershed through existing watershed health goals and projects as well as help expanding our environmental mission through river planning, technical guidance, project management, grant writing, stewardship, advocacy, outreach, and education. This position will support the Executive Director and will help FOTY meet its programmatic and project goals as outlined within the adopted strategic plan.

A qualified individual will fulfill numerous duties of the organization including but not limited to: maintaining professional work environment, planning, meeting attendance, community outreach/education, collecting, processing, and evaluating environmental data, preparing reports and work plans, grant writing, public speaking, fundraising, and events.

Full time, exempt, salaried (employee will work an average of 40 per week)

Responsibilities:

  • Program development:
    • Coordinate science-based activities in and around the Yampa Valley and potentially outside of the basin.
    • Provide youth development opportunities including coordination with other partner organizations/government agencies.
    • Develop and maintain partnerships with river related entities, community members,  and others to support community outreach and events.
    • Develop strategic planning initiatives for program growth and evaluation.
  • Environmental Program leadership and assistance
    • Assist and eventually lead the river health monitoring effort (Yampa River Scorecard Project)
    • Perform project scoping, review and outreach for river related projects conducted by FOTY and/or partner organizations
    • Assist with current environmental programming including creating and leading new initiatives.
  • Volunteer Logistics assistance
  • Work and communicate with a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Attend watershed planning meetings including provide technical support
  • Assist in communications and outreach for FOTY fundraising and operations.
  • Plan, develop and implement outreach and education programming regarding Yampa River watershed and public lands protection
  • Outdoor, field education expeditions
  • Work with community members, including youth and elders, on environmental field science activities
  • Provide science-based evidence to support projects:
    • Collect water samples and conduct water quality analysis
    • Monitor fish and macroinvertebrates insitu
    • Conduct holistic monitoring of specific reaches of the Yampa River
    • Develop outreach materials and reports based on scientific data
  • Public relations:
    • Partner with numerous interdisciplinary organizations involved in land and water protection
    • Create and oversee production of educational videos, newsletters, and multimedia
    • Heighten FOTY social networking
  • Grant applications
  • Help manage and update membership, donor, and volunteer contact databases for ongoing and future outreach efforts.
  • Assist ED with projects and programs as needed.
  • Other fundraising
  • Due to the size and nature of our organization other various tasks may be necessary and a varied and diverse background is appreciated within this position.

What is the ask:

Experience could include but is not limited to:

  • BA/BS or equivalent work experience.  Education and experience in natural resources, land and water resource protection, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), data management, community outreach, and/or education.  Additional experience in non-profit and/or local community work preferred.
  • Ability to work with various stakeholder groups and backgrounds
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to process and analyze environmental data for river health reports.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision after being given direction.
  • Ability to be solutions-based and engage in collaborative decision making.
  • Ability to multi-task and organize a diverse workload.
  • Ability to learn and convey FOTY’s vision and work to volunteers, supporters, and collaborators.
  • Ability to demonstrate capability to address the job related tasks addressed under “Responsibilities”
  • Technically capable and able to understand basic operations as well as being able to learn new software easily.
  • A self-starter and self-motivated individual .
  • Organized and able to keep records related to work output and managing a basic budget.

Ideal skills but not required:

  • Knowledge of river recreational concerns and terminology.
  • Knowledge of Yampa Valley geography and in-basin water concerns
  • Some ESRI GIS experience or knowledge

Location, Hours and Pay

Location: Work from home while COVID restrictions are in place, post-COVID work will be from home with some office time. Individuals will be expected to meet with the Executive Director weekly (virtually or in-person), Employee must be based in the Yampa Basin while employed.

Hours: This is an Exempt position and will be salaried. Work hours will average 40 per week over the year, schedule will be determined with the Executive Director. Work hours are flexible, but the majority will be required to be during normal business hours to attend meetings and fulfill organizational needs. Some work hours will be expected on weekends and after normal business hours to attend meetings, meet program goals, participate in organizational events, and other events as identified.

Pay: $45,000-$55,000, Commensurate with experience

Benefits: 3-weeks paid vacation (15 days) 6 days sick leave, 9 holidays. It is our intent to offer a benefits package in the new fiscal year, which will be determined and voted on by the Board of Directors for 2022.

Equipment: Individual will be expected to have regular access to a personal work computer and reliable access to internet service in order to accomplish work tasks and attend meetings.
